IGCSE Professional Teacher Certificate
IGCSE-Aligned Professional Teacher Certificate · Syllabus 5882 (2025–2030)
Programme Purpose
The IGCSE Professional Teacher Certificate is a practice-based professional development programme for teachers who want to become more results-oriented in their classroom practice, raise the consistency and standardisation of teaching across their subject or department, and strengthen their professional knowledge and skills. The programme is built on a spiral of professional learning across five modules, each deepening the candidate's ability to plan, teach, assess and reflect within an IGCSE-aligned context.
Who This Programme Is For
Practising IGCSE teachers who wish to formalise and deepen their classroom expertise. The programme is suitable for those entering a new IGCSE subject, teachers seeking a structured professional development qualification, department heads aiming to raise consistency across their team, and practitioners who want a portfolio-based credential that evidences their development. Candidates must be practising teachers with access to a classroom and a mentor.
Programme Structure
The programme comprises five modules delivered over approximately 12–16 weeks each. Module 1 — IGCSE-Aligned Classroom Practice; Module 2 — Teaching and Learning in Action; Module 3 — Developing Reflective Practice; Module 4 — Practitioner Inquiry in Action; Module 5 — Professional Development & Critical Analysis. Each module requires guided learning, individual/collaborative study and work-based learning totalling 150 hours across the programme.
Assessment & Portfolio
Candidates are assessed through a portfolio of evidence submitted at the end of each module. The portfolio includes: evidence of practice (completed forms and teaching artefacts), evidence of learning (written explanations of key concepts), and evidence of reflection (critical evaluations of classroom practice). Grading is at three levels — Distinction, Pass, Fail — applied against four criteria: Understanding Teaching & Learning; Developing Thinking & Practice; Analysis & Discussion; Communication & Presentation.
The Spiral of Professional Learning
Learning progresses through a spiral: Identify & Investigate → Plan & Develop → Put Into Practice → Reflect & Evaluate, then repeat at a deeper level. Each module builds on the last, revisiting key areas with increasing depth and critical engagement. Candidates move from describing classroom events to analysing their causes and evaluating their impact on learner progress.
The Role of the Mentor
Each candidate must have a mentor — an experienced colleague who provides observation, feedback and professional dialogue throughout the programme. The mentor observes classroom practice, conducts pre- and post-observation meetings, supports the practitioner inquiry in Modules 3–4, and helps develop the candidate's professional development plan in Module 5. Mentor support is a programme requirement, not optional.
Cambridge Alignment
The programme is aligned in scope and approach to the Cambridge International Diploma in Teaching & Learning (PDQ 5882, 2025–2030). The four assessment criteria, the portfolio structure, the spiral of learning and the emphasis on observation, reflection and mentor support all mirror the PDQ Diploma framework. Candidates who complete this programme are well-prepared to progress to formal Cambridge PDQ accreditation.
